How do countries decide to finance their health care systems? Experts from the HFG Project will explore that question at the “Health Finance Food Court: What’s Cooking?” session of the Global Health Mini-University on Friday, March 7^th.

Session overview: All countries, rich and poor, struggle to finance health care in a way that is adequate, efficient, equitable, and sustainable. To address these challenges, the last 30 years has seen many policy options to improve health financing in developing countries: cost recovery, provider-payer split, decentralization, pay-for-performance, etc. The reality for all countries is that a mix of health financing mechanisms, combined with improving service provision, is necessary to move towards universal coverage of quality health services. The key is to ensure that the different mechanisms are complementary, not fragmented and working at cross-purposes.
