Tackling the Challenge of Financial Sustainability: Ghana’s NHIA
Since its establishment in September 2003, Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has captured the global health community’s attention as one of the most ambitious plans for universal health coverage in Africa. From modest growth of mutual health organization schemes to a rapidly scaled-up national program, the NHIS covers an estimated 35% of the population.
A key challenge facing Ghana’s Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA)—the governing body of the NHIS—is how to ensure financial sustainability of the insurance scheme while also increasing enrollment and improving effective coverage of services so more Ghanians can access the health services they need.
For over two years, HFG has been working in partnership with the NHIA to address this challenge. In an interview, NHIA Director of Claims, Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby, explained how HFG and the NHIA are working together for the betterment of the NHIA and the public.
