Peru: “Gestión en Salud” Toolkit Delivered to University of San Marcos

531446767254_gIn September, the web-based “Gestión en Salud” (Health Management) toolkit went live, with delivery to two stakeholder organizations – the University of San Marcos and the Government of Lima. The Health Management Toolkit is a suite of 17 tools developed, implemented, and refined by USAID and partners in the 20+ years of collaboration with the Government of Peru and Ministry of Health to strengthen Peru’s health systems. The tools and approaches developed to strengthen regional health systems in Peru focus on the areas of governance, human resources, financing, and health information systems.

These tools have been successfully implemented in several regions in Peru, with others expressing interest but lacking access to the same technical assistance to implement the tools. To address this need, USAID/Peru and HFG designed and developed a comprehensive, user-friendly online toolkit to help match user needs with appropriate tools. The toolkit will be available to Peruvian institutions and stakeholders, with the broader purpose of improving and scaling up health system components under decentralization.

On September 9, 2015, USAID/Peru Chief Health and Education Officer, Clifford Brown, delivered the toolkit to the School of Medicine at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (University of San Marcos) at a handover ceremony. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the Director of the Research Unit were present for the ceremony. The toolkit will be housed on the university’s website to improve the relevance of training to pre- and post-grad students in the health science programs. The toolkit is available at: http://gestionensalud.medicina.unmsm.edu.pe/and can be translated into several languages.

On September 11, 2015, HFG’s Peru Chief of Party, Alfredo Sobrevilla, delivered the Management in Health toolkit to the Lima Regional Government in Huaral, Peru. At the handover ceremony, regional Governor Nelson Chui Mejía “commended the hard work of health personnel, and technical assistance from USAID in developing and installing the program.”

Following the ceremony, two training workshops were delivered to 100 health professionals: a training on the DIAGNOSTICA-Medicamentos (Diagnose-Drugs) tool to Huaral Hospital personnel, and a training on the ORGANIZA-Recursos Humanos (Organize-Human Resources) tool, to micro-network personnel at the Huaral’s “Ismael Guzman Valverde” Health Facility. The advanced software will streamline management of several hospital functions, including reducing lines, simplifying procedures, and preventing medication shortages. The software implementation begins this month in health facilities in Huaral and will be rolled out throughout Lima subsequently.
